What Are Special Offers and Sponsored Screensavers? Why So Many Different Price Points?

Note that each Kindle ebook reader, with the exception of the Kindle Fire, has kindle touch special offersspecial offers (coupons) and sponsored screensaver ad versions and non-ad versions which usually run about $40 more. So each Kindle model has up to four different prices, depending if they come in WiFi and 3G versions - 2 prices for WiFi, 2 prices for 3G with and without ads. All the price listings in the comparison chart above lists the lowest price with offers. The offers don't show everywhere, just on the home screen and screensaver, not while reading. So if you want to save some money, get the cheaper version. If you really cannot tolerate any kind of ad promotion, then spend the one-time extra cost and never see an ad on you Kindle for the rest of your life. It's up to you.

Kindle 4 Cons

The best feature of the Kindle 4 is its price at $79, but it is Amazon's most basic model and its priced so low because it does lack some of the features of the other Kindle models. Let's compare it to the Kindle Touch WiFi which is $20 more. The Kindle 4 lacks audio ability meaning it does not have speakers or an audio jack for headphones and so does not support audio files. It has a 5-way controller instead of a touchscreen which can make searching or browsing a little more cumbersome. The Kindle Touch has more than double the memory of the KIndle 4th generation, holding 3,000 books vs 1,400. The Kindle Touch also has double the battery life - up to 2 months vs only 1 month in the Kindle 4. But if you want one of the best cheap ebook readers, this is the one to get. So to summarize:
  • No Audio Capability - No text-to-speech, audiobooks, or mp3 files supported.
  • Less Storage - 2G vs 4G in Kindle Touch
  • Less Battery Life - 1 month vs 2 months in Touch model
  • No Touch Screen, Instead has 5-way controller
The first original Amazon Kindle was released in November, 2007 and has become a world-wide phenomenon. Prior to its release, the only other ebook reader or wireless reading device that was comparable was Sony's ebook reader. There are a lot more advantages to Amazon's Kindle as summarized on this page: Amazon Kindle vs Sony eBook. The Barnes and Noble Nook has given the Kindle some competition, but now with Kindle's many offerings of models and price points and still very high quality, it;'s hard to beat. Here is our Kindle vs Nook Comparison Chart and review.
